Surveys suggest that today’s baby boomers–those born between 1946 and 1965–will likely spend time caring for an aging parent or loved one, according to Paäge et Cie, a senior care consulting and financial services company.

Baby boomers in this category dedicate enormous time, energy and resources–many times, financial assistance–to make sure their aging loved ones are safe, secure, comfortable and maintaining the best possible quality of life. But, their own health and well being may be in jeopardy–there are only so many hours in the day!

To make matters more difficult, caregivers often lose out on moneymaking opportunities. They receive fewer promotions and wage increases along with less education as part of dropping out of the workplace or working fewer hours to care for a parent. This could result in a substantial loss of savings for their own retirement.

Most aging parents don’t want to feel as if they’re a burden on their children. But while caregivers deserve respect for their compassion and willingness to help provide elder care, how do they handle careers, children and care giving without completely wearing themselves out?

Look for community service organizations that offer help. Caregivers should start the search for community service organizations by visiting http://www.eldercare.gov. This government website is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging. Once they enter a zip code or city and choose a topic, a list of resources pops up.

Hire outside services. By spreading out the work a bit, caregivers give themselves a much-needed break so they stay healthy and can continue helping their parent. They should consider hiring services for house cleaning, yard work, laundry, grocery shopping, running errands and organizing.

Ask for help from family members. Caregivers should not be afraid to ask for help from family and friends. They can ask a family member to come over and visit, read a book, teach a senior adult how to use a computer, help set up a cell phone, or take a walk around the block. They should be specific about what’s needed and encourage people who want to help, but can’t, to provide a gift of services.

Consult with an elder care or senior care consultant. These consultants have seen the situation many times over although it’s likely a first time event for the caregiver. Consultants help caregivers weed through the information and help them better handle long-term care planning, often saving costly elder care attorney fees down the road. When choosing an elder care or senior care consultant, caregivers should look for someone who has the financial and organizational skills necessary to handle their parent’s worries, wishes and priorities. They should offer a customized solution while building a strong relationship with other family members, accountants, attorneys, financial planners and investment advisors.

The PDP-DrugFinder is offered at no cost and provides users with prescription drug plan features, cost-sharing information for both 30-day preferred pharmacy and 90-day mail order prescriptions, and detailed drug utilization management or usage restrictions. The PDP-DrugFinder provides site visitors both basic and advanced search capabilities. Users first select their state and can enter at least the first three letters of their prescription drug name, click on “Search” and choose the medication from the list of possibilities. Users can also browse medications alphabetically by choosing the first letter of the drug name in the PDP-DrugFinder preference box. Alphabetical searches will list the medication name along with the strength and packaging information for the drug, its National Drug Code (NDC), and the number of Medicare Part D plan formularies nationwide that include the drug. Missions Emphasis Week kicks off this Sunday, Feb. 12, at Liberty University. Held each semester, the week is devoted to global missions, giving students a chance to meet representatives from mission agencies and attend special mission-focused convocations and seminars.

This semester’s Missions Emphasis Week will be one of the largest ever at Liberty. More than 130 representatives from 60 organizations will come from all over the world to network, educate, mentor and recruit students.

A “Parade of the Nations” will serve as a special introduction to the week during Monday’s convocation at 10 a.m. in the Vines Center. International students will enter wearing traditional dress and waving their country’s flag. Jossy Chacko, the Founder and International Director of Empart, a global ministry that exists to ignite church planting movements among unreached people, will be the featured speaker.

Marilyn Laszlo is scheduled to speak in Wednesday’s convocation about her experience as a Bible translator in Papua, New Guinea. To wrap up the week, campus pastor Johnnie Moore will speak about his experience with missions at Liberty during Friday’s convocation.

The theme for the week is “[un] REACHED,” with Romans 15:20-21 as the key verse: “and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, but as it is written, ‘Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.’”

Moore said he believes this Scripture accurately represents this generation’s role in missions.

“We believe that this moment in history is the first time that we can actually foresee the completion of the Great Commission,” Moore said. “It is remarkable that God has made Liberty one of the largest and most influential Christian institutions of all time now. It is a providential and synergetic time and we want to do everything we can for God’s kingdom.”

Missions organizations will set up booths on the first, second and third floors of Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center. Students are also encouraged to have a meal with the representatives in Reber-Thomas Dining Hall.

In addition to hearing stories from missionaries, there will be a series of events throughout the week to expose students to different cultures and help them get involved with missions work.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Demoss Hall 3028, a special “Experience Ethnos” series will expose students to the customs of Tibet, Afghanistan and Kenya.

On Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Schilling Center, a concert will feature the Children of World International Children’s Choir with an international coffee and tea tasting. Children of the World is a branch of World Help and features orphaned and disadvantaged children from all over the world who speak and perform songs in English and their native tongue on tours across the United States.

Liberty is also proactively promoting involvement in global missions by launching a fundraiser on Tuesday night during hall meetings for residential students. Students will be asked to donate money to build and fund a school in Rwanda through social media on Liberty’s website and Facebook page. This project was born from a recent mission trip that Liberty students took in November 2011.

Liberty currently has 120 students majoring in Intercultural Studies, with more than 300 students participating in several courses.

In the coming months, the Intercultural Studies degree will shift to a Global Studies program. The new program will allow students to have a wider range of training and education to enable success in their cross-cultural endeavors and will make it easier to have a double major.

Our Lady of the Lake University announces the launch of its Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) online degree program. Prospective students can choose from two specializations: Leadership or an interdisciplinary track. The Leadership specialization offers students in-depth study of leadership techniques and strategies, while the interdisciplinary track offers the opportunity for a more expansive perspective of organizational leadership, allowing students to select supplementary courses within the Business Administration, Sociology and Social Work programs at OLLU.
